Miyazaki's The Boy and the Heron Arrives on Digital Now
Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki's latest short film, "The Boy and the Heron," is now available digitally. The film will also be released on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD in Japan on July 3 and in North America on July 9. It will stream "later this year" on Max in the US and Netflix in regions outside the US and Japan.
"The Boy and the Heron" is Miyazaki's first new directorial work since "The Wind Rises" in 2013. The film tells the story of a boy who befriends a heron while living in a rural village in Japan. The film is hand-drawn and features the same lush and detailed animation that is characteristic of Miyazaki's work.
Critics have praised "The Boy and the Heron" for its beautiful animation and heartwarming story. The film has been compared to Miyazaki's earlier work, such as "My Neighbor Totoro" and "Kiki's Delivery Service."
